Bowood House and Gardens near Chippenham

The Bowood Estate has been home to the Lansdowne Family for over 250 years. Set in stunning “Capability” Brown parkland, Bowood House is among the most unique places to visit in Wiltshire, England. The Estate has evolved over the years to include the luxurious Bowood Hotel, Spa, Championship Golf Course, Children’s Adventure Playground, and many other features. Visit one of the finest stately homes and gardens in England, Bowood makes an unforgettable destination for all tastes and ages.

Bowood can be found in Derry Hill village on the A4 between Calne and Chippenham and has been the Lansdowne family home since 1754. After the Second World War, the Estate's future hung in the balance. The "Big House" was derelict and full of dry rot. A beautifully proportioned Georgian house, in the centre of "the most beautiful park in England". In 1975 his son, the present Marquis, opened the house and grounds to the public. Three years later, he restored the derelict stables and grooms' quarters to create a sculpture gallery, exhibition rooms, restaurant and shop.

Between late April and early June you can visit the Rhododendron Walks. Situated in a 60 acre garden on a separate part of the estate (entry extra), this woodland garden of azalaeas and rhododendrons is considered to be one of the most beautiful gardens of its type in the country.

Discover the rich and fascinating history of Bowood House and the Lansdowne family, set within 100 acres of beautifully landscaped ‘Capability’ Brown Parkland. Surrounding the Georgian House is the Italian-inspired Terrace Garden, the Private Walled Gardens, and the herbaceous border, all radiating colour throughout the seasons. Children will be thrilled with the adrenaline-fuelled Adventure Playground featuring a life-size pirate ship.
