Powderham Castle, Kenton, Exeter

Powderham Castle lies in a beautiful deer park on the banks of the River Exe, just a stone's throw from the historic cathedral city of Exeter. The Castle was first opened to visitors in 1959, since then in excess of a million people have been through the doors to share in over 600 years of history and heritage and take away many fond memories.

Having survived a great deal of damage during the Civil War, the Castle was restored and altered in later centuries. These days, visitors can marvel at the breathtaking Georgian grand staircase and the stunning eighteenth century music room. The original Victorian Kitchen is available for visitors to have a glimpse of life below stairs in the Earl's household and appreciate how the 19th century kitchen would have been run.

Very little of the Castle itself has changed since those early days, but there are now many more attractions in the grounds for visitors of all ages to enjoy. This year we expect to welcome back visitors, along with many new ones, to enjoy a wonderful enchanting day out at one of the loveliest places in Devon.

At Powderham Castle we want to encourage children to make the most of nature and the outdoors so we have some exciting new things planned this season with children and nature in mind...

Our Nature Trails have been developed by the Exeter Woodcarvers to incorporate two new trails. The walk up to the Walled Garden and beyond will be even more fun and engaging. There is plenty to look out for high and low so keep your eyes peeled. Of course you will still be able to earn one of our NEW Powderham medals for doing it too!

We have given the Nature Nook a makeover and created a place for children to get involved in some Nature Crafts. There will be something different to make each month in keeping with the season. Why not have a go at making a daffodil or a butterfly. If just want a quiet spot to relax the Nature Nook will still be a place you can go and perch yourself on a hay bail and do some colouring or reading if you prefer.

Up in the Walled Garden you will discover our new Potting Shed - this is somewhere else you can spend time making something to take home with you. Mum, Dad, Grandma or Grandad can help you make a plant pot out of newspaper, plant a seed in it which you can take home and nurture into a sunflower. The activity in the Potting Shed will suit the season. There is plenty to explore so you can make your own discoveries and bring them back to the Nature Nook and tell us about them too! We can't wait to share Powderham and its surrounding natural beauty with you.

The licensed Courtenay Cafe offers a range of light lunches, refreshments and delicious cream teas. We can seat up to 25 inside the Courtenay Cafe with additional seating in the Coach House as well as outdoor seating so that visitors can enjoy the Westcountry sunshine!

We offer a selection of sandwiches, light lunches and a homemade 'daily special' as well as speciality teas, coffees and cakes. We always have options on the menu to suit vegetarians too. For younger ones the children's lunchboxes are the popular choice. The Cafe inside is cosy, but has a ramp to make it accessible to wheelchair users.

You are most welcome to bring your own picnic if you prefer and there are designated areas - by the lake or in the Walled Garden where you can relax and enjoy it.
