Royal Day Out

visiting the Kings Gallery, Royal Mews and Buckingham Palace State Rooms

Itinerary

  • Your Royal Day Out will last approximately 4 and a half hours.

  • You will begin your Royal Day Out at The King's Gallery, followed by the Royal Mews and then the State Rooms, visiting all three venues on the same day.

The King's Gallery

The Queen’s Gallery has now become The King’s Gallery. Your Royal Day Out will start with a visit to The King’s Gallery to see the exhibition The Edwardians: Age of Elegance. This new exhibition will explore the opulence and glamour of the Edwardian era – the period between the Victorian era and the First World War – through the lives and tastes of the monarchs of the age.

The Royal Mews

Next you will visit the Royal Mews which is one of the finest working stables in existence and responsible for all road travel arrangements for The King and members of the Royal Family. You will see historic coaches and carriages, including the Gold State Coach and the Diamond Jubilee State Coach, the newest coach at the Mews.

The State Rooms

Your Royal Day Out will finish with a tour through the magnificent State Rooms in Buckingham Palace which are used by The King for ceremonial occasions and official entertaining. Each room is furnished with many of the treasures from the Royal Collection, including paintings by Rembrandt and Rubens; sculpture by Canova; and some of the finest English and French furniture in the world.

The day ends with a walk through the garden, with splendid views of the Palace and the famous lake.

Buckingham Palace is recognised around the world as the home and official residence of the King, the focus of national and royal celebrations, as well as the backdrop to the regular Changing the Guard ceremony. Open to visitors for a limited number of weeks each summer. Dates for 2025 are Thursday 10 July - Sunday 28 September 2025.

The State Rooms are the public rooms in the Palace where The King and members of the Royal Family receive and entertain their guests on State, ceremonial and official occasions. There are 19 State Rooms, which mainly reflect the taste of George IV, who commissioned the architect John Nash to transform Buckingham House into a grand palace in 1825. The State Rooms are furnished with many of the greatest treasures from the Royal Collection, including paintings by Van Dyck and Canaletto, sculpture by Canova, Sèvres porcelain, and some of the finest English and French furniture in the world.

Many of the State Rooms have particular uses today. The Throne Room is used by The King for court ceremonies and official entertaining, and was the setting for the wedding photos of Prince and Princess of Wales. The White Drawing Room, perhaps the grandest of all the State Rooms, serves as a royal reception room for The King and members of the Royal Family to gather before official occasions.

When you arriveat each venue, you will pass through an airport-style security check. You cannot take photographs within the State Rooms. Eating and drinking aren't allowed inside the Palace, with the exception of bottled water.

Drinks, cakes and sandwiches are available in the Garden Café at the end of the State Rooms tour. Situated overlooking the Palace’s lawn and lake, the Café is a great place to relax after your busy day out. Food and drink are not available at The King's Gallery or the Royal Mews but there are many cafés and restaurants nearby. Eating and drinking are not permitted inside any of the venues.

PLEASE NOTE: The East Wing is not part of the State Rooms tour.
