Brownsea Island Poole - National Trust

Brownsea Island Poole - National Trust

There is plenty to discover here on Brownsea Island and at a mile long and just under a mile wide, a walk around the island is easily manageable. Home to red squirrels and scouting.

Brownsea Island is dramatically located in Poole Harbour, with spectacular views across to the Purbeck Hills.

Thriving natural habitats - including woodland, heathland  and a lagoon - create a unique haven for wildlife, such as the rare red squirrel and a wide variety of birds, including dunlin, kingfishers, common and sandwich terns and oystercatchers.

The Outdoor centre invites you to follow in the footsteps of Lord Baden-Powell and the very first Scouts who camped here in 1907. Groups of Scouts and Guides can camp here during the summer.

The perfect day's adventure - travel by ferry from Poole to this island wildlife sanctuary is easy to get to but feels like another world from the moment you step ashore.

There is plenty to discover here on Brownsea Island and at a mile long and just under a mile wide, a walk around the island is easily manageable. Why not follow one of the routes on the map, or one of our suggested trails to discover the range of habitats? Alternatively explore the island to find your favourite viewpoint or picnic spot.

Walk along the south shore beach to discover the remains of the Victorian pottery kiln, you might even spot a brick with 'Branksea', the old name for Brownsea, printed in it. At the far end of the island, enjoy views across to the Purbecks to the left and Poole to the right, on a clear day you might be able to spot Corfe Castle.

Walk through the woodland to experience the peace and tranquility of the island, away from the hustle and bustle of the mainland. You may spot one of the elusive Sika deer or some red squirrels.
