Marlborough Wiltshire and Avebury

Marlborough is situated in the picturesque rural north-east of Wiltshire. Much of its great natural beauty is environmentally protected and it offers the discerning visitor a unique blend of modern attractions and facilities. The High Street is one of the widest in the UK and lined on both sides with characterful old buildings housing an array of high quality shops.

The town displays the confidence of wealth from times past, yet today remains vibrant and progressive with its own chic café culture.

The Merchant's House - one of the finest 17th century middle-class homes open to visitors in England - is also to be found here and contains a wealth of period features, paintings and artefacts.

Avebury

World-famous for its stone circle and on-site museum at the heart of a prehistoric landscape. National Trust.

In the 1930s, the pretty village of Avebury, partially encompassed by the stone circle of this World Heritage Site, was witness to the excavations of archaeologist Alexander Keiller. Keiller opened the museum here to display his findings in 1938 in the old stable building of Avebury Manor where he lived.

In re-erecting many of the stones, Keiller uncovered the true wonder of one of the most important megalithic monuments in Europe. You can see his fascinating finds on display in the museum, still housed in the stables but now also in the 17th-century threshing barn, where interactive displays and activities for children bring the landscape to life.

Avebury Manor had a major transformation as a location for the BBC series entitled The Manor Reborn.

Please note: Admission to the circle is free, but for those wishing to enter the Museum, may have to pay for entry.

Return: 17.00
